The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) honors an outstanding student from each University Transportation Center (UTC) at a special ceremony held during the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Annual Meeting. Each student is recognized during the ceremony by a Departmental official. The TRB Annual Meeting is a the largest transportation conference in the world with hundreds of presentations made over the course of four days.

Each student receives $1,000 plus the cost of attendance at TRB from his/her Center, plus a certificate from USDOT.  In addition, the Council of University Transportation Centers (CUTC) banquet features a key speaker from the transportation field and provides its own awards for university transportation research and education.

 

SELECTION CRITERIA

  • Graduate or undergraduate candidates who are U.S. citizens or permanent residents and who have been enrolled for at least three quarters at Cal State San Bernardino are eligible to receive the award.  Individuals who have already graduated and who meet the other selection criteria are also eligible for the award. 
  • Eligible candidates must have a GPA in excess of 3.25 (out of 4.00). 
  • Eligible candidates must demonstrate an interest in transportation research or wish to pursue a career in transportation or a transportation related field. 
  • Selection will be based upon accomplishments in three areas:
    • Technical Merit and Research
    • Academic Performance
    • Professionalism and Leadership

Evidence of research merit is based upon faculty nomination and evaluation of submitted written papers or reports.  Academic performance is based upon courses attempted and grades attained.  Evidence of professionalism and leadership can be in the form of presentations at professional society meetings and symposia, and leadership in student professional activities.

  

SELECTION PROCESS

The student should submit the following information to the selection committee to assist it in its deliberations:

  • Nomination letter from at least one faculty member
  • Academic transcript and short vita
  • Copy of one paper written by the nominee
  • An essay (no more than one-page, double spaced) by the nominee describing their interest in transportation research, and why they want to attend the TRB conference.
